Clair D. Thompson & Sons, Inc., of Jersey Shore, Pa., has recalled approximately 700 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to a notice posted by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recalled ground beef items were produced and packaged on September 27, September 28, and October 2, 2017. The following products are subject to recall:
- 5-lb. plastic bags of “Thompson’s Ground Beef”
- 10-lb plastic bags of “Thompson’s Ground Beef”
The products were sold in New York and Pennsylvanian and they are marked with “EST. 9681” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
There have been no reported cases of E. coli food poisoning associated with the recalled ground beef. The problem was discovered by a third-party laboratory who detected E. coli in a sample of ground beef. FSIS was notified on October 2, 2017.
Because the ground beef may be frozen, FSIS is concerned that it may still be in consumers’ freezers. Anyone who bought the ground beef should return it to the store. The beef should not be consumed.
E. coli O157:H7 is a bacteria that produces Shiga toxin and it can cause deadly food poisoning. The symptoms of infection include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps for 2 to 8 days.
Most people recover from E. coli infections within a week, but some people develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). The risk of HUS is greatest for young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems.
